Abstract

This essay is addressed to the members of the American Society for Public Administration and to all others who might well be members. It is now possible for any organization man or woman who participates in meetings to determine their success by applying the principles of a new science, chair administration. This possibility was first observed when sitting in university seminars and later in governmental and church meetings. If uncomfortable chairs weary the seat, then minds and persons wander from the meeting. Unscientific arrangement of chairs prevents effective communication and obscures decisions. To initiate master's programs in chair administration, funding is needed by some innovating foundation. Learning by trial and error or home study is no substitute for full-time enrollment in a graduate professional program. A curriculum should be selected which is fully interdisciplinary, spanning such fields as policy analysis, communication theory, program planning, social relations, interior design, engineering, group dynamics, carpentry, applied administrative management, proctology, and introductory anatomy. Meanwhile, chair arranging will continue to be a profession of the committed, practiced by those who "show up early" and prevail over unskilled chairmovers.
