Abstract

The article discusses a diagnostic framework for the formulation of strategy, developed by Leontiades (1983), and uses case method to illustrate its application to four manufacturing companies in Great Britain. The framework is based on strategy alternatives, organizational level (corporate or business), management style (steady-state or evolutionary), and the company's stage of growth. Strategy alternatives are from the portfolio management matrix, which assigns a position of build, hold, sell, or buy to individual business units. Strategic business units, the rationale for research methods, and the firm's environment as a change agent are mentioned.
