Abstract

This article offers a reply to the measurement of the growth of the non-market sector and its influence on the economy of Great Britain. It points out crucial theoretical assumptions on Britain's economy which need to be answered and interpreted. First, it claims that the growth of the non-market sector is important to the economy of the country. Second, it argues that the trend of market sector investment and net exports was significantly downwards once allowance is made for capital consumption and housebuilding is not part of the capital stock which provides employment. Finally, it must be established that there are plausible assumptions which point to the strong possibility of a general connection between the growth of the share of the non-market sector and a squeeze on net imports and employment creating investment.
