Abstract: This is a conference volume contrasting the factors influencing economic development in East Asia and Latin America. While some time has passed since the papers were written and, in the meantime, important changes have occurred, the policy ideas arising out of the comparison still hold, all the more so since violating them probably accounts for the 1997 crisis in East Asia.
