Abstract
- Both the causes and the timing of changes in the normal daily or weekly hours of work have been the subject of considerable controversy. This paper proposes to discuss each of these problems in turn. The first section deals with the causes of changes in the normal hours by focusing attention on the reasons why unions press for reductions and why employers yield to such pressures. The remaining sections provide a theoretical model to account for the unusual timing of the changes in normal hours that have occurred in Great Britain in this century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
