Abstract

In 1991 the Tate Gallery director Nicholas Serota called a meeting to discuss the problem of how to get newspapers to take contemporary art more seriously. One of the invited guests was 28-year-old Jay Jopling, then a fledgling dealer who was already known for his chutzpah in brokering sales between young artists, such as Marc Quinn and Damien Hirst, and the ad mogul turned collector Charles Saatchi.
