Abstract

High‐resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy‐loss spectroscopy observations were performed for the first time at surface films segregated by low temperature treatment from an amorphous layer made by a co‐sputtering deposition technique. It was confirmed that the layer was hexagonal boron nitride having c‐axis perpendicular to the material surface, presumably explaining its features of low occlusion and adsorption of gases as obtained from other experiments. In situ observation of layer growth under high intensity electron irradiation was also performed and it was observed that the layers grow by changing their bonding with different layers.
