The article presents information related to the research programs undertaken by different branches of the U.S. department of labor. Projects undertaken by the Manpower Administration's Office of Research and Development range from basic explorations of labor market functioning to experiments and demonstrations testing diverse methods of overcoming chronic or acute employment problems. The broad objectives that guide the research and development program in its major areas of interest are provided in the article and typical projects in each category are briefly described. A major component of the project will be the establishment of an industry-oriented manpower delivery system for possible replication in other states. A computer-based labor market information system, developed by John T. Dunlop, Dean of Harvard University, and D. Quinn Mills of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is designed to reduce skill shortages and unemployment in the construction industry. Research directed by professor Charles Holt, is moving into the final stage of a three-year examination of interrelationships among labor market changes, aggregate demand, inflation, and unemployment.
