Abstract

The article explores the connection between isolation from job opportunities and the persistence of gender and racial inequalities in U.S. society. The authors utilize survey data to suggest that a significant white male advantage over white women and Hispanics in number of job leads. The role of social networks and social capital in sustaining this advantage is discussed. Inequality in the receipt of job information is tied to high levels of supervisory authority. Other topics include minorities in the labor market, civil rights, and equal opportunity.
