Abstract

The article discusses the history of the Works Project Administration (WPA) Emergency Nursery School Program in Texas between the years 1934 and 1943. The program is described as an early nation-wide attempt by the U.S. government to provide social services to citizens in need. A study of official documents are used to demonstrate how the WPA Emergency Nursery School operations met their goals, with a particular focus on records and photographs from visits to Texas schools between 1939 and 1940. Nursery School Program guidelines on promoting personal health and hygiene for children are examined.
