Abstract
- The article presents a study regarding the formations of various black layers on candoglia marble in the façade of the Milan, Italy Cathedral. Black layers were compared using optical and electron microscopy, x-ray spectrometry and micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It showed that there were 3 main types of black crusts such as black crust with decayed substrate, compact deposit, and black encrustation due to exogenic materials deposition.
