Abstract

The article presents a discussion of the techniques of the early 20th century American itinerant photographer Francis Marion Steele, commonly known as F. M. Steele. Introductory details are given noting his unique self-title as a "tourist photo artist." Discussion is then given describing each element of the title, including his traveling photography business chronicling people in their own environments, his pioneering of the photography field in its early decades, and his influences from the visual artists of his generation and earlier. Multiple examples of Steele's work are given alongside contemporary paintings, comparing and contrasting styles.
