Abstract

The article discusses a study which examined the risk of venous thrombosis associated with oral contraceptives. The study included 1,524 premenopausal women more than 50 years of age and who are not using hormonal uterine device or depot contraceptive and 1,760 controls. It found that oral contraceptive administration increased risk of venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism by fivefold. It also discovered that the risk of thrombosis was higher for deep venous thrombosis of the leg compared to pulmonary embolism.
