Abstract

The article examines the frescoes from the Casa de Fresco dos Sanches Baena semi-underground building in Vila Viçosa in Southeast Portugal. The paintings are in an advanced state of degradation exhibiting partial detachment of paint layers and mortars, salt efflorescences and abundant biological colonisations. Fungal and bacterial strains are identified in painted panels that compose the frescoes. A strong correlation was found between microbial activity and decay areas of the painting.
