Abstract: The article reports on the launch of "The Sustainability Airport Manual" (SAM) by the Chicago, Illinois, Department of Aviation in August 2009. This manual provides specific guidelines and scoring systems for airports' design, construction, operations and maintenance, concessions and tenants. The SAM covers extensive checklists for designers and contractors, and a scoring system that awards any given project 1 to 5 green airplanes as a certificate.
