Abstract

The article reveals that parents can help a newborn infant adjust to life outside by appealing to her or his senses. There is a need for parents to mimic what babies heard, felt, smelled, tasted and saw in utero to facilitate the calming reflex and help her or him feel safe and secure. Pediatrician Harvey Karp says skin-to-skin contact is very comforting to babies. To prevent fussiness, parents can talk or read aloud to the baby. Light adjustment is also needed to help the baby relax.
