Abstract

The crystal structure of a new calcium thorium phosphate has been refined by the full-profile Rietveld method using X-ray powder diffraction data. The sample has been synthesized by the sol-gel technique. The phosphate has been identified by X-ray powder diffraction and IR spectroscopy. The refined composition is represented by the formula Ca<subscript>10.26</subscript>Th<subscript>0.12</subscript>(PO<subscript>4</subscript>)<subscript>7</subscript>. The CaO<subscript> n</subscript> and PO<subscript>4</subscript> polyhedra are distorted compared to the corresponding polyhedra in the basic compound β-Ca<subscript>3</subscript>(PO<subscript>4</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>.
