Abstract

The article presents information on the Canadian involvement in the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939. Over 1,700 Canadians participated in the war and more than 400 died, yet Canada has not recognized those who served in the war as veterans because the Foreign Enlistment Act of 1937 made their service illegal. The article discusses author George Orwell's service in the war and his claim of revisionist history ruling the event. The article explores Orwell's account of the war in "1984" and his essay "Looking Back on the Spanish War," and discusses why many Canadians chose to fight in the war. It also examines the Communist Party of Canada's connection with the war.
