Abstract

The article discusses the geology of northern Nigeria and geologic research conducted by scientist John Downie Falconer. Falconer's analysis of tin deposits included a description of the landscape as a palimpsest surface and an account of etch plains and inselberg formations. The author suggests that steep-sided bornhardts survived multiple phases of etching. The article explores Falconer's contribution to geomorphological theory. Other topics include mantle-controlled planation, basal steepening, episodic exposure, and increased relief amplitude.
