Abstract

The influence of the extreme right National Front (FN) party has grown over the past three decades and previous research has shown that the left and right parties have responded in various ways, most significantly by bringing the issue of immigration into the national agenda. This study demonstrates that right party legislators have responded to the rise of the immigration issue by proposing anti-immigrant legislation. The findings of this paper suggest legislators propose anti-immigrant legislation at greater frequencies when they represent departments with high concentrations of immigrants or high levels of FN support.
