Abstract
- Axel Mundigo has been a close working partner even though his intellectual trajectory is situated outside the feminist field. His paper, 'Reconceptualizing Men's Role in the post-Cairo Era', however, draws extensively on feminist conceptual tools. This is not a trivial observation. Studies on masculinity are not always inspired by feminist ideas. Consequently, for those of us working within feminism, Mundigo's endeavour is both flattering and engaging. The paper is like a mirror in which the winding road of contemporary feminist thinking is reflected, modified and, eventually, simplified. This mirror effect is what inspired my commentary. It has not been written as an exclusive dialogue with the author, but as a review and appraisal of our own (feminist) conceptualization. I will initially focus attention on the concepts and uses of 'patriarchy', 'gender', and 'power'. Later, I want to problematize notions of 'male responsibility' and 'male involvement'.
