More pieces in the promoter jigsaw: recognition of −10 regions by alternative sigma factors.

Two papers in this issue of Molecular Microbiology from Carol Gross and colleagues describe experiments that investigate how two alternative Escherichia coliσ proteins recognize target promoter −10 regions. A combination of genetics, biochemistry and bioinformatics is used to show that determinants in two adjacent domains of the σ proteins contact discrete sequence elements in the −10 regions.
