Abstract

A promising manager in his early forties leaves a high-paying job to go to a different company; another high performer, at age 35, refuses a key promotion to a division in another city. Events like these continue to take companies by surprise, says this author, because very little is known about the forces that influence job mobility (although the phenomenon itself is a familiar one). This is true especially at the middle- management level. In this article, he presents a mobility matrix that was developed from an extensive study of the job moves of nearly 1,300 managers. The matrix depicts mobility phases throughout the average manager's career, and the major influences on these phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
