Abstract

The article discusses a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on the issue of representation of defendants, who are suffering from mental illness. It is stated that according to the ruling, the states can insist on counsel representation for such defendants who are not competent to conduct trial proceedings themselves. The court stated that the right to self-representation is not absolute and the defendant don't enjoy the freedom to abuse the dignity of the courtroom.
