Abstract

The article presents an in-depth exploration of the artistic philosophy and aesthetics of the turn-of-the-20th-century American artist Arthur B. Davies. Details are given highlighting his working philosophy of art as an expression of life and his extensive use of the central metaphor of breathing. Several examples of Davies' work are cited and analyzed, particularly discussing his use of human figures and their poses and postures. It is asserted that Davies was heavily influenced in his work by contemporary dance and exercise systems which were also highly focused on breathing. Several individuals who exemplified this influence are also profiled.
