Abstract
- The article discusses the conflicts between the practices of economics and human rights. There is an assumption that economic progress is closely linked to the human rights experienced by the poor of the world, the author states, allowing for scarcity to be overcome which would then provide a basis for human rights to develop. Mainstream economics is individualistic and equilibrium driven, and defines its goals in terms of the pursuit of personal interest by isolated individuals. Also discussed is the reduction of society's complexity.
