Abstract
- The magnetocaloric properties of powder samples of the monoclinic YFe<subscript>2</subscript>H<subscript>4.2</subscript>, YFe<subscript>2</subscript>D<subscript>4.2</subscript>, and Y<subscript>0.5</subscript>Tb<subscript>0.5</subscript>Fe<subscript>2</subscript>D<subscript>4.2</subscript> compounds have been studied at their itinerant electron metamagnetic transition (T<subscript>M0</subscript>=131, 84, and 127 K, respectively). Large reversible entropy changes are observed, up to -ΔS<subscript>M</subscript>=10.83 J K<superscript>-1</superscript> kg<superscript>-1</superscript> for a field variation of 5 T in YFe<subscript>2</subscript>D<subscript>4.2</subscript>, making these alloys candidates for magnetic refrigeration applications. The results are compared with previously published data on other potential magnetic refrigerants with itinerant electron metamagnetic transitions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
