Abstract

The article focuses on the real purpose of the inclusion of Ecolier Limousin in the book "Pantagruel," by Francois Rabelais. The author proposes that the chapter is not just a caricature of the linguistic abuses of the university students in Paris, Frances or of the pretensions of scholasticism. He proposes that the chapter depicts the author's involvement in the European vogue of Latinate diction and obscure and archaic styles. Additionally, he points out that it is the Rabelais' way of expressing his view on archaisms and unusual diction and in the debate over the meaning and authority of usage.
