Abstract

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to consider several methods for establishing and growing a pool of potential library donors. Who gives to libraries and where are they? All types of libraries can benefit from private giving; the initial challenge in building a philanthropic base is identifying prospective donors. Design/methodology/approach - Considers the donor development strategies employed by the University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries, noting those most effective. Findings - A range of initiatives can help establish and build a donor base, such as robust programming, expanded partnerships, annual fund efforts, friends groups, and a mix of technologies. Originality/value - This paper fulfills an identified information/resource need and offers practical suggestions to library administrators for building a donor base. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
