Abstract
- This editorial discusses the political and social significance of the election of Barack Obama as the first African American president of the U.S. The role of race in the election is considered in terms of the difficulties faced by previous African American candidates including Shirley Chisholm, Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson. The author also believes that Obama will need to govern by consensus in order to effectively lead the country.
