Abstract

The article reports that the 40th anniversary of the birth of the concept of packet-switching is falling in August 2008. According to a spokesman from the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Great Britain, on August 7, 1968, Donald Davies, of the NPL, presented his keynote paper on what he termed packet-switches to an international conference in Edinburgh, Scotland. It mentions that the paper was the result of his attempts to create the first local area network (LAN) in the world at NPL.
