Abstract

The article offers information on the fish called Ruivaco do Oeste. According to the IUCN criteria B1ab this species must be considered Critically Endangered. This small cyprinid (about 100 mm TL) differs from the other members of its genus by the following combination of characters, including 40-43 canaliculate scales on the lateral line, six to seven scales above the lateral line, and two to three scales below the lateral line. It occurs in three small coastal streams in west central Portugal. The species is now restricted to small isolated pockets located upstream of the major sources of pollution in the rivers Alcabrichel and Sizandro.
