Abstract

The article presents studies that focus on the small firms' behavior and practices. A framework based mainly on low-wage family-owned firms was identified to describe different types of small firms. The framework was tested out in the context of high technology and non-family-owned firms. It discusses the basis of evidence in differentiating firms including product market, labor market, resources, strategy, rules, management styles, and network embeddedness. The implications of the type of firm to the competitive strategies are also explained.
