Abstract: The article describes the result of the environmental life-cycle analyses of ballast and generic concrete track beds in Great Britain. It highlights the manufacturing, construction, maintenance, dismantling and recycling of the track bed components. The article also compares the life-cycle analyses of energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions to show the impact of track bed ballasts on the environment.
