Abstract

The article offers information on the research conducted by researchers at the University of Warsaw's Geobotanical Station and the Polish Academy of Sciences' Mammal Research Institute regarding the Biatowieza woodlands between Poland and Belarus. It is considered is one of the best-preserved forests in the region. Researchers study the vicinity to get an idea of how things once were. The forest spreads over some 146,000 hectares in Poland and Belarus, wherein various parts of the vicinity are managed in various ways. It is a place where grey wolves hunt red deer, woodpeckers hunt for beetles in 500-year-old oaks, young boar splash through alder bogs blooming with yellow irises. They prefer to study species in conditions where they were adapted.
