Abstract

The Garden City Association, now the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), was founded on June 10, 1899 by a group of men hoping to create a new way of living. They were led by Ebeiiezer Howard, the author of "To-Morrow: A Peaceful Path to Real Reform." Originally the TCPA planned to celebrate its centenary by publishing a new edition of Howard's book. The second part of the book is a chronicle of ideas about the best way to accommodate the proposed building of new houses in Great Britain over the next few decades. Howard's Garden City idea with its special approach to financing and its combination of work and residences was not taken up, but there was a movement to build new towns in Great Britain. Two chapters of this book are largely about recreational use of the countryside, particularly by the less affluent members of society. There is discussion of 'plotlands,' the division of farms into small plots, largely for holiday homes. In addition to that, the article presents information on various other books.
