Abstract

An essay is presented on the potential fall of the U.S. from being the leading scientific nation in the 19th century. It recounts the rise and fall of former science powers and notes the influence of economic progress on a country's transformation towards scientific growth. It further cites the factors needed to achieve excellence in science as well as highlights the implications of China's emergence as a science power.
