Abstract

The article explores the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and substance use among past-year pregnant and postpartum women in the United States. The subject of the study include more than 40,000 women, aged 18 to 50 years old, more than 14,000 of whom have past year pregnancy status. Results show that there is significant lower rates of alcohol use disorders and substance use as well as lower risk of having any mood disorder in past year pregnant and postpartum women, compared to nonpregnant women. However, there is higher prevalence of major depressive disorders in postpartum than in nonpregnant women.
