Abstract

The article profiles British writer and socialist William Morris and his influence in Japan in 1904. It traces the development of his studies by taking into account three approaches that include the history of studies on Morris into three periods, the significance of his studies in conjunction to the social and cultural contexts in the country during the period it was made, as well as the comparison of his image in the country and in Great Britain. It notes that the centennial anniversary of his death in 1996 has arisen questions and insights on him. The celebration also highlights the opening of the William Morris exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
