Abstract
- The article presents the study that traces the earliest American graphic design magazines. The study identifies the development of graphic design by analyzing the editorial content of those early periodicals as well as the themes with which they were concerned. It indicates that the profound technological changes of the industrial revolution dramatically altered the practices of all the crafts and led to increase specialization. It suggests that the graphic design periodicals had their beginnings in three types of publication, including those serving the printing trades, the advertising business and the fine arts.
