The article discusses the advances in the pathogenesis and diagnosis of liver fibrosis. It is noted that evidences which indicate a close link between inflammatory activity and fibrosis stage in chronic liver disease are increasing. Meanwhile, liver biopsy still represents the gold standard for the evaluation of liver fibrosis. One of the approaches of detecting fibrosis is based on routinely performed blood tests to identify alterations in liver synthetic function.
