Abstract

The article focuses on the vegetation of Akpatok Island which lies in the mouth of Ungava Bay to the south of Hudson Strait. It mentions that only Polar bears, Arctic foxes and birds inhabit the Island and there is extreme lack of vegetation over most of the Islands area. It describes the climate of the Island, formed entirely of Ordovician limestone, which is extremely adverse to plant growth. It presents a comparison of the flora and fauna of the Island with the adjacent mainland and other northern regions of the Atlantic including the Godthaab Fjord and the Atlantic coast of Labrador, Newfoundland.
