Abstract

The article reports on the survey conducted by the Office of Biological Education (OBE) regarding biology education in the U.S. Data gathered by the Digest of Educational Statistics indicates that for every ten pupils in the fifth grade in 1959-1960 wherein 7.2 graduated from high school in 1967, 4.0 entered college in the fall of 1967 and 2.0 are likely to earn four-year degrees in 1971. According to the Registry of the National Science Teachers Association, in 1967, there were 33,639 biologists among the 185,000 teachers of junior and senior high school science. Discussed are the details of the issue.
