Abstract

The article describes the characteristics of Phragmites communis Trin, a tall reed with annual cane-like shoots and an extensive perennial rhizome system, in the British Isles. The plant is native and widespread in Great Britain, abundant in the south and east, more scattered in the north and west. It occurs in climates ranging from those of the tropics to those of latitudes higher than 70° N. It is usually found in low-lying areas intermittently or permanently flooded with shallow still water. The author also discusses the plant's species, communities, response to biotic factors, grazing and trampling, competitive ability, performance in various habitat and morphology.
