Abstract
- The article discusses the vegetational history of muckle moss located half-way between Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Carlisle on the north side of the South Tyne valley, 1 mile south of the Roman camp of Housesteads in Great Britain. The growth of the moss has undergone stratigraphical and pollen analytical studies and shows that there has been a succession of vegetation in the lowland. The site begins to develop wet woodland and replaces sphagnum growth and this in turn has been modified as a result of improved drainage.
