Abstract

The article focuses on mycorrhiza with specific reference to the importance of mycorrhiza to trees and theories on mycorrhizal fungi. It refers to a study by researcher J. M. Janse in 1897, which described the endotrophic mycorrhiza of coffee in humus rich soils in Java and postulated an external source of carbon used by the fungi. The article presents recent observations from Amazon Forests where the Alpha Helix research vessel of Scripps Institute of the University of California at San Diego, was employed. It proposes a theory based on observations of soils over a wide area of the Amazon Basin, which explains how minerals are recycled.
