Abstract

The article discusses the role of the military in the Pakistani political sphere. Beginning with the growing influence of the military during the early years following Pakistani independence, the article also deals with military intervention in domestic politics; issues such as blackmail, displacement, and supplantment are presented. The role of former President and Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the military is also dealt with, especially his poor treatment of the Civil Service of Pakistan (CSP) and Bhutto's creation of the Federal Security Force (FSF). The article concludes with an overview of the military's return to power in Pakistan and the consequences for civilian-military relations.
