Abstract

There is no fundamental difference between crime and terrorism and situational crime prevention – the science of reducing opportunities for crime – has many lessons for preventing terrorism. In particular, the rationality of terrorist decision making must be recognized and the opportunity structures for each different form of attack must be separately analyzed. This will assist in protecting the most vulnerable targets, controlling the tools and weapons used in each form of attack, and eliminating some of the “facilitating conditions” that make the attacks possible. Failing to eliminate the easiest and most rewarding opportunities for terrorism could invite further attacks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
