Abstract

The article discusses the consciousness studies and a philosophy of music education in the U.S. It states that investigating and evaluating music is a way in to the understanding of human life, but, emphatically, it is also an expression that has values of its own as people use it to express their understandings of what it means to be human. Ultimately, their consciousness is concerned with fundamental questions which must be answered and the questioning and answering must begin early. It is discussed that within the formal educational framework is where the philosophy of music education should occur because there is no other place less encumbered by ideologies and doctrinal controls that has the appropriate resources and capability to focus on great questions of human existence.
