Abstract: The article focuses on current political conditions in Tonga. The country is preparing for the forthcoming general election, which is scheduled to take place on April 23-24, 2008. The state of emergency, which was implemented after the November 2006 riots, has been extended until at least mid-March 2008. The minister of tourism, Fineasi Funaki, is currently under investigation for allegedly misappropriating funds from the Ministry of Tourism.
